On Jaunary 29, 2019, the first synagogue in Washington, DC rolled down the street on wheels to become the new home of the Lilian & Albert Small Capital Jewish Museum. One of the three interactive pieces to mark the opening, the 50sqft interactive map table fosters an understanding of what, where, and who "Jewish Washington" is — the story of the first community and how their culture adapted to and shaped Washington, DC.

Upon entering the concept phase we learned that the content around which the interactive was conceptualized did not quite fit into a map-centered experience. Listening closer, we realized that the client's desire for an interactive map stemmed not from the significance of the locational data, but from a desire for a relevant and engaging visual tool that could be used consistently across multiple stories.

Accordingly, we shifted our mindset from a data/information-focused platform to constructing a story-driven experience. Landmarks and geographic patterns would be enveloped within a broader narrative — specific, relatable events that plant the bigger picture into familiar grounds.

A shared experience geared towards a broad audience meant "averaging" the depth of involvement — or the pace of the flow. To achieve this balance we devised a linear, segmented experience comprised of chapters, in which a brief movie clip sets the context, followed by a set period of free exploration that embeds a more in-depth understanding. This was an approach that leveraged the massive, 50sqft projection surface to convey a complex experience in a simple yet impactful way.

While the chapters were sequenced chronologically, each could also stand alone as a fulfilling experience. The structure allowed a flexible cadence that accommodated various levels of interest.

User flow. #1 is the video segment, and #2 and #3 are the interactive segment. Transition between the two is automatic after a set duration of time, which is indicated by a timer on each individual user area.

Meanwhile, a larger canvas also had implications on optical and physical reach, and a larger budget to achieve a high-resolution projection. Furthermore, the context of a multi-user experience limited utilization of the theatrical canvas.

Working around a tight budget, we strategized the simplest possible individual experiences that collectively depict a rich narrative. Using just three capacitive touch buttons per individual, we decoupled information from illustration and displayed them on individual user areas and the shared center, respectively. Users poke around in their stations to learn about various landmarks, while distinctly colored markers reflect their activity on the central map projection.
